About David

David Middleton is a nationally recognized professional nature photographer, writer and naturalist. His philosophy is to photograph whatever he finds attractive and then think about trying to sell it. This has led him to photograph subjects and places as disparate as harbors, wildflower meadows, large mammals, small birds, forests, quaint villages, indigenous markets and people and mountain streams.

David has written and photographed for more than 20 years and has traveled extensively throughout all of North and South America, Antarctica and Africa. His photography and writing is regularly featured in many publications including magazines, books and calendars. David has lead tours and workshops for many organizations including Maine Photographic Workshops, Rocky Mountain School of Photography, The Great American Photography Weekend, Santa Fe Workshops, Coupeville Arts Center, Nature’s Best Photography School, the National Audubon Society, the National Wildlife Federation, Penn. State University, Voyagers International and the Orvis Company.

David is also a Contributing Editor for Outdoor Photographer Magazine and on the Board of Rockport College, a fine arts school in Rockport Maine.

David has produced 10 books including: Ancient Forests, The New Key to Ecuador and the Galapagos, Prayers through the Seasons, American Vision, The Nature of America, the largest nature photography book project ever undertaken, which he created, co-directed, contributed photographs to and wrote. His new books are The Nature of Vermont and The Photographer’s Guide to Vermont, The Photographer’s Guide to the Maine Coast and The Photographer’s Guide to the Oregon Coast all published by The Countryman Press a division of W.W. Norton.

More than an outdoor photographer and naturalist, David is a gifted and enthusiastic teacher who truly enjoys sharing his experiences and expertise with people. David teaches about 15 workshops a year on photography, writing and creativity. He sees approximately 1000 students a year and critiques about 10,000 images a year. Overall, David has lead more than 150 tours and taught more than 200 workshops. He lives on an old dairy farm in the Green Mountains of Vermont.
