Reflections

Reflections

Reflections are a very popular subject to photograph- our eye is attracted to the odd nature of seeing part of the world upside down! While it seems very straight forward to take a picture of a reflection it is more difficult than you think if you want to get everything you see in focus. this is because, optically, the reflection doesn't sit on the...

Hand Holding Twilight Owls

Hand Holding Twilight Owls

"Okay, I get what you wrote about hand holding a telephoto lens when photographing in the daylight- widest f-stop, highest useable ISO, brace if possible, shoot a burst- but how did you get the shot of the owl in the dark? Still hand held?" Yupper! Still hand held. The reason it is hand held is pretty simple- I didn't have any other choice! I didn't have...

Handholding Lions

Handholding Lions

Time to pull the curtain back and let you in on the how-to of some of the photos from Africa. Every picture I took on this last trip I took hand held. Yes I carried both a tripod and a monopod and yes I had them with me whenever I was photographing but there was never an opportunity to use them. It's impossible to set up a tripod in a safari vehicle when...

Packing for Uganda

So what do you bring these days on a (mostly) photo safari to East Africa? Here is what I am packing and the reasons why: Lenses- 16-35, 24-120, 80-400. All Nikons. The 24-120 is my go to, standard lens- perfect for landscapes and portraits. the 80-400 is the new Nikon lens that I am taking instead of the monster 200-400. I am losing speed with the smaller...

Off Again to Uganda!

Hard for me to believe but in a couple of days I am off again to Uganda! This time though I will be traveling more for fun and I will be with members of my family. And the goal won't be to produce a video for a non-profit. The goal will be to just have fun...well, mostly. I made some promises to myself when I left Uganda in March. It is now time to follow...
