Thoughts on Writing
I have several rules to writing. OK, there are not really rules. Let’s call them strong suggestions. None of these are original and I take no credit for any of them, but all have proved true over my 30 years of writing. The suggestions are not listed by importance — I put them on the page as they tumbled off my pointy, little head. Write however is...
Duck Brook
Duck Brook in Acadia National Park is a favorite stream on mine and has rewarded me repeatedly over the 30 years of photographing it. This year the red maples above the stream had magnificent color so the leaves that came down in the stream were great. This is my favorite photograph from this stream.
Beyond the Fall Cliche
I realize that everyone wants the big beautiful Fall landscape shot but there is more to the Fall than big landscapes. If you look around and look small there are lots of other possibilities for magnificent photos literally right under foot. Looking small and looking away from the expected is especially important if you happen to live in an area where Fall...
Phone Phavorite
I took this photo with my phone (because it was the only camera I had with me when scouting this trail). I took the class back and lots of people got great shots of the leaves and reflection I am happy to report. Perfect day, no wind, blue sky- all I really needed was a tripod and a real camera!
Beaver Pond Sunset
The one and only good sunset we had in Acadia National Park last week we photographed in a beaver pond! I know, not the usual sunset location but the light was really nice and the longer we lingered the prettier the scene became. Here is a sequence of beaver pond sunset shots covering 15 minutes of changing light. The changing lily pads and reed patterns...
Favorite shot from Maine
Just got back from teaching my Santa Fe Workshops Maine Coast workshop. We had spectacular color this year, as good as I can remember. I wasn't photographing much and the shots I did take I either took with my phone or my little point and shoot but I managed to get some good ones. This one is my favorite.
New England Fall Color report- 2
It's been about a week and the fall color has progressed but not by much. I took a trip across the mountains a couple of days ago and while there were pockets of color high in the Green Mts there is still very little every where else. This part of the season is what I call the 'telephoto time' because you need a telephoto lens to reach out and grab the...
Garage Photography
Going to take another high speed turn here, folks. Hold on! I got my little red Jeep inspected today and while I waited I grabbed my camera and poked around the old garage. This is a typical old time New England garage- opened in 1922, Model T parts lying around, a collection of very old chainsaws on the upper shelf, a metal lathe with ceiling mounted...
New England Fall Color Report
It's almost Fall color season here in New England so I thought I would give my first report on how the season is progressing. It's not. Still too early to get an idea of what is going to happen. We have had a long, very dry period here but most of the trees seem to be doing fine, there just isn't much color. The only color I have seen is in the lowest,...
Fall Color Photography
It's that time of the year again - time for my annual Fall color photography tips. I'm going to keep it very short and sweet this time around because I know that the three people that read this have attention spans of a gnat. Here goes- a. Go out during a light rain or just after a rain when everything is wet. The colors will look great and magnificently...
Wide angle landscapes
So how did I get this shot? Here is what I was thinking: As I walked up Indian River in Sitka, Alaska I wanted to do a broad landscape showing both the river and the old-growth forest on either side. The only way to do this, to get a wide enough reach to get both sides of the river while in the river is with a wide angle lens. So I put my trusty 24-120mm...
